Pre-op Instructions

Preoperative Instructions for IV Sedation

Please follow these instructions for your safety. If fasting or escort requirements are not met, your procedure may be postponed.

Eating and Drinking

  • Do not eat or drink anything for 6 hours before your scheduled procedure unless your surgeon gives you different instructions.
  • Take only medications approved for the morning of surgery, with a small sip of water. Tell us if you have eaten or drunk anything.

Medications and Health Changes

  • Review all prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines and supplements with our team. Do not stop prescribed medication on your own. Most prescribed medications can be taken as scheduled before surgery with a sip of water. Ask for a specific plan for blood thinners, insulin, diabetes medicines and weight-loss medicines, including GLP-1 medicines.
  • Call before your appointment for fever, cough, congestion, breathing problems, vomiting, a new illness, possible pregnancy or changes in your health or medications.

Escort and Recovery Arrangements

  • A responsible adult must accompany you, remain at the office during your procedure, receive discharge instructions and drive you home. A taxi or rideshare is acceptable only with your responsible adult accompanying you.
  • Arrange for a responsible adult to stay with you for 24 hours after sedation. Arrange help with children or anyone who depends on your care.

Preparing for Your Appointment

  • Wear loose clothing with short sleeves and flat shoes. Remove contact lenses, jewelry and oral or facial piercings. Avoid makeup and nail polish that may interfere with monitoring. Brush your teeth without swallowing water.
  • Avoid alcohol, cannabis and recreational drugs before surgery. Tell us about recent use. Ask our team how long to avoid these substances, smoking and vaping before your procedure.

After IV Sedation

  • For at least 24 hours, do not drive, operate machinery, drink alcohol, use recreational drugs, sign legal documents or make important decisions. Continue these restrictions if you remain drowsy or take medicines that impair alertness. Follow your discharge instructions.
